I’m no stranger to school; I’ve been at it for almost all of my life, and so it’s become a big part of who I am. However, I had never really questioned the school system itself when I was younger, blindly plotting along, doing my homework, being proud of myself when I got that A grade I desired, frustrated when my results weren’t as I predicted. I’ve spent almost half of all my days at school, for many years. What if those years were a complete waste of time? Unless you are content with being a robotic human with no critical thinking skills, you MUST read this to understand why the school system is outdated, and what you can do to overcome the issues it causes.
School Provides Every Formula, Except the One for SUCCESS
I think most people can agree that not all subjects cater to people’s desires. Subjects that include a heavy amount of formula memorisation, such as mathematics and physics, are difficult for many to digest. Lots of pupils don’t see the value in ingraining these formulas into their brain, as they don’t feel it is practical enough to their lives for them to clutter their brain with it. Of course, this doesn’t mean that mathematics and physics aren’t useful to learn, because they certainly are, considering the extent that they improve your problem solving and critical thinking skills. However, there is one vital formula that never gets discussed in schools; the formula for success. Obviously this is a metaphor and hyperbole, since there is no single objective formula for ‘success’, which itself is an ambiguous term, but the concept still applies. What is the number one way that people use to measure success in life? Finance. Finance dictates how we can live our lives, we can’t even obtain essentials such as food without money. So if wealth is such a fundamental aspect of success and to our lives, why the hell is it not taught at school? Some of you might think that school does teach you some concepts, but realistically, I want you to ask yourself “When was the last time I actually got taught about finances?”, because the answer to this will come as a shock. In order to overcome this issue, you have to step outside of the current system. Take a step back, figure out what you need to do to build wealth, and go after it. Educate yourself on the ins and outs of money, there is an incredible amount of free content on platforms such as youtube, so learn, and apply to your life, because the school system doesn’t teach you how to manage your finances, real life experience WILL.

School Teaches Linear Concepts in a Linear Way
Have you ever heard the expression “You can bend and twist a line all you want; it’s still a line.”? Probably not, because I created it. However, it has a deeper meaning. In this context, it is supposed to infer that no matter how many rubric criteria you cover, no matter how many assignments you complete, and no matter how difficult the concepts you’re covering are, it’s still one method of assessing yourself. What that teaches you is that there’s just one way to achieve a certain goal, or complete a certain task in life, which simply isn’t the case. In life, there are multiple pathways you can take that lead you to the idolised term “Success”. Why? Because success is subjective, and it can be reached using more ways than answers to any exam you’ve taken in your entire life. Of course, this doesn’t somehow mean that school is futile, because there are some valuable lessons you learn and skills you develop in school, but these can be developed in other ways that still keep that youth-oriented curiosity and drive to learn and expand as a person. Schools need to focus on the reason why we learn what we learn, teachers need to be paid more, and teachers need to provide the same energy input as they expect in energy output from their pupils, while retaining their efficiency in broadcasting their knowledge and information. However, this is unreasonable to expect, so if you want to break free from the ordinary people, it is YOUR job to break free of what is expected from someone in your situation, and achieve above and beyond. Learn. Apply. Repeat. YOU need to take YOUR learning into YOUR own hands, and direct YOURSELF. Nobody is going to hand it to you on a silver platter nowadays; it is up to YOU.
Emphasis on Grades is Too Extensive
We all know that age old feeling of getting that A grade you desired on a test or assignment you didn’t feel that confident in, and most can relate to getting a grade far lower than they predicted when handing up an assessment. Grades are a way we can directly tie value to the work we complete in school. If an assignment doesn’t get graded, it has no meaning for many, and therefore children don’t have an incentive to perform well in it. When you tell them a test is worth 10% of their grade though, an instant sense of worry or panic is instilled into them. Well, what if you told them that instead of it being worth 10% of their grade, it’s worth 10% of their LIFE; how would they react? Of course, this is a large exaggeration. Nonetheless, the motive for completing work in school shouldn’t be connected to a letter with no intrinsic value. Instead, the motive should be the education of one’s self, which will carry multiple benefits in the future. The reason is that this motive can be applied to any work they do, regardless of whether it’s in school or not. This is a far better solution than a grade, which while assigning a result for an assessment is necessary, placing too much focus on it can cause you to lose track of why you’re really learning what you’re learning. If too much emphasis is kept on grades, students won’t be able to find the motivation to complete tasks that don’t HAVE a grade, which includes a large pool of tasks in the real world. They NEED to be able to be disciplined enough to attack their goals vigorously, with determination, intention, and power. The only way to do that is to preach the importance of those values, and draw real world connections to help them grasp the given concepts. The concentration should be on what the problem was, what method and process they utilised to solve it, and how it can be improved/why. Explanations are a necessity, we can’t be teaching children ideas, when they don’t know why they should be learning it. There needs to be a target, a goal at the end, that has real value and will assist them in life, rather than one letter followed by some lousy feedback, or in some cases, no feedback at all.
